Coffee Liqueurs constitute part of the wider liqueur category. The term coffee liqueur used here refers to liqueurs flavored with coffee or coffee essence, and should not be confused with hot coffees that are served with a shot of alcohol in them.
Coffee is a crop that is grown extensively in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. The preparation of coffee essence for coffee liqueur is not dissimilar to the methods used in brewing commercial coffee, except that it is reduced many more times. The two major producers of coffee liqueur, Kahlua and Tia Maria, both pay particular attention to where their beans come from, just as a coffeehouse might.
